Oromo is an Afro-Asiatic language, and the most widely spoken of the Cushitic family. It is spoken as a first language by more than 25 million Oromo and neighbouring peoples in Ethiopia and Kenya.
About 95 percent of Oromo speakers live in Ethiopia, mainly in the Oromia Region. In Somalia there are also some speakers of the language. In Kenya, there are 322,000 speakers of Borana and Orma, two languages closely related to Ethiopian Oromo.
Within Africa, Oromo is the language with the 3rd most speakers, after Arabic and Swahili.
